Book Review for Mimas Book Club by Sir Brian Helwater
Book: Lady Macbeth by Ava Reid
Score: 6/7
If you’re looking for a deep dive into Shakespearean lore with a twist of dark, historical fantasy, Ava Reid’s Lady Macbeth is definitely one to pick up. It’s a unique reimagining of the infamous character, but with way more depth and emotional complexity than you’d expect from the original. Reid manages to give Lady Macbeth a voice that’s powerful yet vulnerable, and honestly, I found myself sympathizing with her more than I thought I would.
The story takes place in a gritty, medieval Scotland with a more mystical, folklore-driven setting. Reid leans into the magical realism at times, giving this novel a haunting atmosphere that kept me hooked. It’s not all doom and gloom, though. There’s a sense of resilience in Lady Macbeth that makes her journey feel both tragic and empowering, which I really liked.
What stands out most to me is how Reid doesn’t shy away from the darker elements of the story—there are some pretty intense, raw moments that reflect Lady Macbeth’s internal struggle. It’s not the easiest read at times, but it feels very true to the character’s downward spiral.
That being said, the pacing could be a bit uneven. There are some moments where the plot drags, and you’re just waiting for something big to happen but it’s not the norm. I also felt like the side characters weren’t as fleshed out as they could’ve been.
Overall, if you’re a fan of dark retellings or stories that explore complex female characters, Lady Macbeth will probably be right up your alley. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely a fresh take on a classic character that I found both compelling and thought-provoking.
Score: 6/7. A solid read, but with a few bumps along the way!
